The Best Halloween Events & Activities Across Anaheim | AMA Travel

‘Tis the Season to Go Halloweening… in Anaheim

New Year’s, Easter break, summer vacation—these are all great occasions to travel. But have you ever considered a Halloween getaway? Yep, there is another option to stuffing your parka-clad kids into lumpy superhero costumes and braving the early snow and cold.

Where to? Our favourite October 31 destination might surprise you: Anaheim, California.

For fans of this ghoulish holiday, you should know the whole city comes together and puts on some of best Halloween activities and parties in North America.

Here’s our picks for what you need to see and do when you make the trip down.

Anaheim Halloween Parade

The volunteer-led Anaheim Halloween Parade has been a Southern California family favourite since 1924.

Local businesses, schools, artists, and representatives from Disney come together to showcase their creativity with a procession of costumes, homemade floats, and plenty of tricks/treats through dusky downtown Anaheim.

When: Saturday, October 29, 2016

Disneyland Resort and Disney Cruise Line

You can bet your mouse ears that Disney goes all out for Halloween. Throughout September and October both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure Park host spirited events for the whole family.

In addition to fearsome fireworks and trick-or-treating opportunities, here’s what’s on the agenda:

  • Main Street Pumpkin Festival. Hundreds of hand-carved jack o’ lanterns across Disneyland’s most famous street.
  • Haunted Mansion. Jack Skellington’s creepy haunted estate gets a makeover for the horror-days.
  • Día de los Muertos. Mexico’s Day of the Dead features a musical calacas trio, Calaveras-style face painting, and traditional Mexican goodies.

Taking a Disney cruise from nearby San Diego? You can expect your ship to be decked with the same amount of spooky décor and eerie events, like campfire-style ghost-storytelling, mask-making, and adults-only dances.

Tip: Don’t forget to pack your best costume!

When: September 9 – October 31, 2016

Knott’s Scary Farm

Of Southern California’s theme parks, Knott’s Berry Scary Farm gets the most dramatic transition for Halloween. All 160 acres are transformed into a twilight zone of creepy mazes, shows, and rides, including:

  • Black Ops: Infected. Arm yourself with a laser gun and navigate though a city swarming with blood-thirsty zombies.
  • Elvira’s Danse Macabre. This nightly ball full of music, dance, and comedy is the only place you can see Elvira, the Mistress of the Dark.
  • Ghost Town Streets. The original scare zone. Make your way though the fog-filled street and avoid bands of monsters.
  • Supreme Scream. One of the tallest thrill rides in the world drops you to your doom—only to stop you right before the bottom.

While the daytime hours are ideal for families with kids, evening activities at Knott’s Scary Farm tend to be geared towards adults.

When: September 22 – October 31, 2016

Motel 6 Feet Under

Hotels are a hair-raising setting for horror movies (The Shining, Psycho), so it’s a fitting theme for a haunted house.

The Business Expo Centre (only a 10 min drive from Disneyland) is the site for Motel 6 Feet Under, our pick for the best haunted house in Anaheim.

Stay close, keep your wits about you, and watch out for monsters around every corner because you’ll be navigating a maze that will disorient the bravest among you.

Cool Fact: The organization behind Motel 6 Feet Under provides job training and employment opportunities for adults in need.

When: October 1 – November 11, 2016
