Travel Checklist — What Do You Need To Do Before You Leave On Your Trip?

No matter whether this is your first trip or you’re a seasoned traveler, this handy checklist will help ensure your journey is safe and worry-free.

Before You Go

Personal and Travel Documents

  • A valid passport is the most recognized form of ID worldwide. Before your departure ensure you have the proper entry visas, health innoculations and relevant information on departure taxes. Many countries also require that your passport be valid at least 6 months or longer beyond the final date of your trip. If your passport does not meet the validity date requirements, you will need to apply for a new one.
  • If travelling with children, carry documentation proving your right to accompany them. Print a consent letter for children travelling abroad (Government of Canada form)
  • Purchase international driver's permit, if needed.
  • Dual Citizenship, find out what you need to know.

Check on Your Flight

  • Flight departure and arrival times are often subject to change without notice. Please reconfirm all your flight schedules with the airlines; 72 hours prior to departure for international flights and 24 hours prior to departure for all domestic flights. You can visit your airlines website or call the toll free number of the airline you are flying with.
  • Check for changes to fees and weights for the baggage policy of your airline. We recommend checking the airline’s website for the most current information.

Travel Health

  • Whether you’re travelling outside of Alberta, to the United States or overseas, even the smallest injury or illness can be devastating. AMA Travel Services strongly recommends you purchase Travel Medical Insurance to protect yourself and family while travelling. AMA members also get the benefit of saving 10% off.
  • Bring an extra copy of your prescriptions (both medical and optical) and medical certificates.
  • Purchase medication and supplies (enough for the trip and extra if lost or your trip extends).
  • Get any required immunizations and copies of your immunization records.

Travel Money

  • AMA Travel has many currency options for your trip including foreign currency, MasterCard Cash Passport™, and fee-free Traveller’s Cheques for members.
  • Use a separate credit card with a LOW limit for vacations.
  • Remember to keep receipts from all purchases.
  • Contact your credit card and bank to inform them of your intended use and destination.

Before You Leave Your House

  • Provide family or friends back home with your travel itinerary and contact details, as well as copies of your passport and other travel documents.
  • Before leaving home put your mail and newspapers on hold, arrange for a friend or family member to check your house periodically, set a timer on a light, and turn off the water.
  • Check your insurance policy to determine how often your property must be checked while your’re away.
  • Avoid travelling with valuables or items you cannot afford to replace if damaged or stolen.
