Travel Tips For A Smooth Sailing

Plan Ahead

Cruise to a destination you desire at the price you want by booking several months before your desired departure date.

Book Shore Excursions Early

Ensure you get your first choice of shore excursions by booking prior to sailing.

Purchase a Roaming Plan for Your Cellphone

Avoid using the ship phones, which can charge up to $19/minute.

Pre-purchase Travel Medical Insurance

Ship doctors are notoriously expensive, so make sure you are covered before you board.

Check-in Online Prior to Setting Sail

Your AMA Travel Agent can assist with checking in online as this will expedite the boarding process. In order to complete online check-in you will need:

  • Personal information for each guest in your party
  • Passport information
  • Cruise loyalty membership number (if you have one)
  •  Onboard expense account information – the credit card that is authorized to be charged for onboard expenses

Basic Dress Code Guidelines

Most cruise lines offer guidelines of how many formal, informal, and casual nights will be onboard, but what exactly do these categories mean?

  • Formal – Tuxedo or suit and tie for men and an evening gown or cocktail dress for women.
  • Informal – A suit or sport coat and slacks (a tie is optional) for men and a cocktail dress or pantsuit for women.
  • Casual – Slacks and a collared sport shirt or button-down shirt for men and a casual dress or pantsuit for women.

Getting to your Cruise

Increasing airline delays and cancelled flights are making it more difficult to get to your cruise on time. Cruise lines are very strict with embarkation times and will probably not hold the ship if your party is late, leaving you to find your own means of transportation to meet the ship at its next port. A pre-night stay will ensure you are at the ship on time and will allow extra time to retrieve your luggage if it is delayed.

Special Diets

You can receive a nightly menu tailored to your needs (celiac, vegetarian, low carb, etc.). If you have any medical requirements, such as needing an insulin container in your stateroom, please insure you notify your agent. Special celebratory requests (such as a birthday, honeymoon or anniversary) can be a wonderful surprise and can be pre-arranged.
