What You Should Know about Family Vacations

What should I look for in a family-friendly hotel or resort?
  • No extra charge for kids sleeping in the same room with their parents
  • A refrigerator and microwave so you can store and prepare snacks and breakfast food
  • A lobby convenience store for fruit and other lunch items you can pack for the day
  • A hotel park or play space can help the kids burn off some steam before bed without disturbing other guests
  • A babysitting service if you’d like to go out for a few hours without the kids
Do children and babies need a passport?

Regardless of age, everyone (including children) needs to carry a valid Canadian passport to fly outside of Canada. Get more information on passport, travel document, and foreign currency services at an AMA centre near you.

Can children travel abroad with grandparents or other relatives?

Though it isn’t a legal requirement everywhere, the government strongly recommends Canadian children carry a consent letter when they’re travelling aboard alone, with only one parent/guardian, or with a group of relatives or friends.
Check out the Government of Canada’s website for instructions on what to put in the letter.

Can a guided vacation accommodate my family’s dietary restrictions or allergies?

Yes. Simply let your AMA travel agent know what you can’t have, and we’ll inform the tour partner so that they can arrange everyone’s meals accordingly.

Do I need travel medical insurance?

Although proof of travel medical insurance is not required to visit most destinations, we strongly recommend you purchase insurance whenever you travel. That’s because your provincial healthcare only covers you within Alberta.

How much luggage should I bring?

Packing light is always the best philosophy, especially when you’re a family on the go. Most of our tour partners limit a guest’s luggage to one suitcase (76 cm x 46 cm x 25 cm) with weight not exceeding 23 kg. You can also bring one piece of hand luggage, like a backpack, shoulder bag, or purse.

Is there any freedom and flexibility in the tour itineraries?

We know that most travelling families like having the freedom to do their own thing, too. If you’re interested in visiting a particular attraction, or you just want an evening relaxing by the pool, your tour itinerary has blocks of time reserved to do with as you please.
