Yes, Cancun is one of the most practically family-friendly beach destinations accessible from Alberta. Direct flights from Calgary and Edmonton keep the travel day manageable. The northern end of the coast, particularly the Hotel Zone's bay-facing side and Playa Mujeres, has calm, shallow water suited to young children. And the ruins and cenotes within reach of the coast tend to be genuinely interesting to kids, not just adults.
Both are all-inclusive Caribbean beach destinations with direct service from Alberta, and for a pure beach-and-resort trip either works. The practical differences: Cancun's coast has more variety, including different areas with different characters, plus the Yucatan's ruins and cenotes within reach. Punta Cana is more self-contained, with most resort stays closer to the airport. If the ruins and cenotes appeal, or if you want the option to explore beyond the resort, Cancun has a built-in advantage.
Yes. Cancun is a popular destination wedding location for Canadian couples. For a marriage to be legally recognized in Canada, there are specific civil requirements under Mexican law, such as documentation, advance notice, and usually a registered civil ceremony. Many couples manage the legal ceremony in Canada and hold the destination ceremony as the celebration. Most larger resort properties have dedicated wedding coordinators who handle the logistics. (And don't forget you can register for your marriage license at your nearest AMA centre.)
